Pure solo reeds from Sabir Mateen – a solo concert recorded in France, and a set that easily stands up to his best American sides of the past decade or so! Mateen plays alto clarinet, alto sax, and some small percussion – and also vocalizes a slight bit, but almost with horn-like intonation that really fits in well with the instrumentation – all in a mode that echoes older AACM and loft jazz styles to which Sabir is clearly a 21st Century heir – a quality that reminds us of older solo records by artists like Roscoe Mitchell or Joe McPhee! © 1996-2010, Dusty Groove America, Inc.
